How to Cut Felt to Make a Scarf
Felt is such a versatile material it can be used for everything from crafting to simple clothing items. Making a scarf from felt is one of the simplest projects you can undertake. The felt cuts easily and because it is one of the few materials that doesn't unravel, you won't have to hem or otherwise sew it to keep it from coming undone. A rotary cutter is especially efficient to use when cutting felt. Just one pass over the material and you'll be done.
Things You'll Need
- 1/2 yard felt, 60 inches wide, any color
- X-Acto cutting mat
- Rotary cutter
- Tape measure
- Tailor's chalk
Instructions
-
-
1
Lay the felt out on the cutting mat in a single thickness.
-
2
Mark 12 inches in on one of the short sides of the felt using the chalk and the tape measure. Do the same on the other short side directly across from your first mark.
-
-
3
Measure 30 inches along the long side to find the half-way point and measure in 12 inches from there. Place another chalk mark at that point so you have three chalk marks all in a row, 12 inches in from the edge of the material.
-
4
Lay the tape measure on the felt, lining it up with all three chalk marks. Use the tape measure as a straight-edge to draw a chalk mark from one end of the material to the other.
-
5
Cut the felt with the rotary cutter by rolling it along the chalk mark.
-
6
Cut fringe on both ends of the scarf using the rotary cutter.

Tips & Warnings
You don't have to use an X-Acto mat if you have a surface to use that is hard enough to be resistant to the rotary cutter's blade.
Scissors can be used to cut the fringe if you prefer.
Felt comes in different weights, so look for one that is heavy enough to be warm, yet light enough to be pliable instead of stiff.
