Tutorial for FileZilla Server

FileZilla Server is half of an open-source project designed to bring FTP capabilities to the Microsoft Windows platform; the other half is the FileZilla FTP client. FileZilla Server is free and supports different FTP server functions commonly found in FTP software, including user management, bandwidth allocation, data connection compression and encryption. You can install the FileZilla Server program to a Windows computer to begin serving clients over the FTP protocol.

      Download the latest version of FileZilla FTP Server by surfing to http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=server in your Web browser.

      Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen prompts to install the software.

      Double-click the FileZilla FTP Server icon to open the management interface.

      Click the "Edit" menu and then click "Settings."

      Click the "Speed Limits" category. Click "Constant Speed Limit of" under the "Upload Speed Limit" category and then enter the value representing 80 percent of your total upload speed. For example, if your Internet connection has a 1 megabit upload capacity, enter "100" as that is 80 percent of the total 125 kB/s upload capacity.

      Click "Filetransfer compress." Click "Enable MODE Z support to enable compression during file transfers, which can decrease the overall file transfer time.

      Click "OK" to save the settings.

      Click "Edit" and then click "Users."

      Click the "Add" button to create a new user.

      Enter the name of the user account and then click "OK."

      Click to check the "Password" box, if desired, and then enter a password for the user account.

      Click the "Shared folders" category. Click the "Add" button to choose which folders this user account has access to and then click the check boxes to determine which privileges are available to each folder, such as read or read/write support.

      Click the "Speed Limits" category and adjust the connection speed settings for the user account, if desired.

      Click "OK" to save the settings.
