How Can I Tell if 4DOS Is Running?

4DOS is a replacement command-line interpreter for the Windows95/98 and Windows ME operating systems. Once installed, 4DOS transparently replaces the Microsoft DOS command-line interpreter. Determining whether a command-line window is running MS-DOS or 4DOS can be difficult just by looking at the screen, as both programs present you with a standard "C:" prompt when started. However, you need only one command to verify which program is running.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open a DOS window.

    • 2

Type "ver /r" at the command prompt.

    • 3

Press the "Enter" key. If 4DOS is running, the return message "4DOS Build xxx (Month Day Year)" is displayed on the screen. MS-DOS returns the message "The syntax of the command is incorrect."

Tips & Warnings

  • 4DOS was replaced by Take Command in later versions of the Windows operating system, and is no longer supported by the original developer, JPSoftware.
