How to Put a Snap on Fabric

How to Put a Snap on Fabric thumbnail
You may use any fabric you like, but if it is lightweight you will need to reinforce it with a square of interfacing.

Snaps are one of the most convenient fashion inventions. They are as simple to close as they are to open, much less time consuming than buttoning buttons, and hardly as irritating as noisy Velcro. Whether you are setting out to make your own clothes or accessories, or are replacing a less desirable fastener with snaps, you will need to know the proper way of putting a snap on fabric. Although it seems like a no-brainer, there are a few steps to follow for successful snap installation.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a fabric pencil to make a mark on the fabric where you would like the center of each snap to be. Make a mark in the same place on the other side of the fabric for the other side of the snap.

    • 2

Turn the plastic wheel on your pliers so the plastic holder is lined up with the metal holder. Cover each of the holders with the rubber covering that comes with your pliers.

    • 3

Set out the parts of your first snap. You should have four parts to each snap: a ball, socket, and two spiked rings. Place one of the spiked rings into the plastic holder with the spikes facing out.

    • 4

Place the socket part of the snap into the metal holder with the raised side facing out.

    • 5

Position the pliers over the first mark you have on your fabric. Ensure that the ring with the spikes is positioned on the side that will be the outside of your fabric. Check that the snaps are centered over the mark.

    • 6

Squeeze the pliers together using more strength than you might think necessary.

    • 7

Place the second spiked ring into the metal holder with the spikes facing up. Place the ball of the snap into the plastic holder with the ball facing down.

    • 8

Line the snap up with the equivalent mark on the other side of the fabric. Ensure that the plastic holder is on top since the ball is facing down and will come through the fabric to the other side.

    • 9

Squeeze the pliers until the snap is in place.
