How to Edit the IM Bar in Meebo
The instant messaging (IM) program Meebo consists of a buddy list, background and chat windows. The program allows you to edit preferences to alter the appearance of the IM bar. Preference options include background image, audible sounds and visible emoticons. Other preferences include IM history and privacy settings. Meebo is available for free on the product's official website. Meebo includes the IM programs Facebook Chat, Google Talk, America Online Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger.

Launch Meebo by double-clicking on its desktop icon.

Click on the "Preferences" icon and click on "Appearance." Click on the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page and scroll to the desired category of background images, such as "Featured." Click on one of the thumbnails to use it as your background.

Use a solid color as your background, if desired. Click on the "Clear Image" button and click on one of the color swatches.

Click on the "Preferences" button and click on "IM" settings.

Check the box next to "Show emoticons in IM message" to enable emoticons. Remove the check to disable emoticons.

Turn IM sounds on or off. Check the box next to "When I send an IM" to hear sounds whenever you send an outgoing message. Check the box next to "When I receive an IM" to enable sounds for each incoming message. Remove the check from either box to disable the option.

Enable IM history by checking the box next to "IM History." Increase your privacy by checking the box next to "Only receive messages from friends."
