How to Recoat an Asphalt Driveway
What was once a handsomely coated asphalt driveway can soon become a tired looking surface after years of exposure to the harsh weather. Though not appealing, the driveway structure is still safe and useful. By applying a top coating, however, you can quickly renew the surface without a major overhaul of the asphalt. Even those unfamiliar with sealing a driveway can complete a resurfacing project in a day. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Push broom
- Small bucket
- Liquid laundry detergent
- Nylon-bristle brush
- Asphalt crack filler
- Utility knife
- Caulking gun

Instructions
-
-
1
Sweep off the driveway thoroughly with a push broom to remove all grass, dirt and miscellaneous debris from the surface.
-
2
Mix together 4 parts water to 1 part dish detergent in a plastic bucket to create a soapy water solution.
-
-
3
Pour out the soap and water solution onto any oil residue on the driveway and work them out of the surface with a nylon-bristled brush. Rinse the spots afterward with a garden hose.
-
4
Wait for the driveway to dry thoroughly for three to four hours before continuing the project.
-
5
Place a tube of asphalt crack repair caulk into a caulking gun and open the tip of the tube with a utility knife at a 45-degree angle.
-
6
Force the tip of the caulk into cracks in the surface and fill them with the caulk. Smooth down the application with a putty knife so that the caulk is level with the driveway. Wait for the repairs to dry before continuing.
-
7
Stir the asphalt sealant with a wooden pole so that the material is uniform and then pour and spread the sealant with an applicator brush in 4-by-4-foot sections. Keep the sealant at a 1/4-inch depth throughout. After 48 hours, resume use of the driveway.
