How to Connect a 3X3 Square of Dots

One classic brain teaser challenges participants to connect all nine dots in a 3-by-3 square. These dots are simple to connect with five lines: Simply trace around the four edges and then through the diagonal to connect the center dot. Connecting the dots with only four lines, however, presents more of a challenge and requires you to think outside of the box.

Instructions

    • 1

Start your first line in the upper left hand corner. Continue the line diagonally to the bottom right corner of the square.

    • 2

Extend the line upwards past the top dot, as if there were an extra, invisible dot above the square.

    • 3

Draw a diagonal down and to the left. This line will connect two dots. Continue this third line until you are even with the bottom row of dots. Once again, this line will end outside the boundaries of the square.

    • 4

Finish connecting the dots by drawing a line across the bottom of the square.
