Molasses is a soft, thick sweetener used for cooking and baking. The deep taste and texture of molasses is used in cookies, breads and pies. Though shelf-stable for years, molasses can crystallize over time making the texture gritty. In order to restore crystallized molasses to a pourable and smooth texture, you must reheat the molasses to remove the crystallized particles. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

      Measure out the desired amount of molasses in to a measuring cup designed for measuring liquids. Though the crystallized pieces will be included in the initial measurement, make sure to only measure out what you need for your recipe or dish.

      Pour the molasses into a microwave safe, glass bowl. Make sure to scrape out all remnants from the measuring cup to keep the measurement accurate.

      Cover the glass bowl with plastic wrap and seal tightly. Place bowl or dish in the microwave.

      Set the power level on the microwave to one-half power. Microwave the molasses for 15 to 30 seconds. Carefully pull back the plastic wrap and stir the molasses with a fork. Check for smoothness in the texture of the molasses.

      Repeat the process of microwaving the molasses, in 10-second intervals and stirring, until all crystals have been removed and the consistency is smooth.

Tips & Warnings

  • To prevent crystals from forming, make sure the lid to the molasses is on tightly and the bottle or jar is stored away from sunlight and heat.

  • Use caution when microwaving molasses to prevent getting burned.
