How to Make a Tulip Skirt

How to Make a Tulip Skirt thumbnail
Tulip skirt fabric can mimic the bright colors of tulips.

Tulip skirts were named after the flowers they resemble. The skirt is designed to fall like an upside-down tulip bulb, with the petals pointing toward the ground instead of toward the sky. The skirt's look is created by the pleats near the waist and the tapered hem that narrows at the bottom. The skirt can be made long to create a curvy appearance or short to create a playful, long-legged look.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your measurements using measuring tape. Measure your waist, hips and the length of your lower half, from your waist to your feet.

    • 2

Select a tulip skirt sewing pattern you like. Read the back of the package for your size; you will need the measurements you took to find your size. The package will tell you how many yards of fabric you need. Choose a fabric in the color and texture you like.

    • 3

Remove the pattern from the package, lay it out flat on an ironing board and iron to remove any heavy creases and wrinkles. Lay out your fabric on a flat surface and spread the ironed pattern over it. Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut along the pattern lines as instructed by the pattern directions.

    • 4

Stitch along the pattern lines as directed by the pattern instructions. Remove the pins as you sew so you do not damage your sewing machine. Stitch the waistband, pleats and hem of the skirt.

    • 5

Add buttons to the skirt for style. Iron the pleats, using starch to make them crisp, if desired. Try on the skirt to see if it fits and make any adjustments if needed.
