How to Dye Flaky Coconut
The hard, hairy surface of the coconut protects the white, meaty fruit inside. Chewing on chunks of coconut may be difficult to swallow, but shredded or flaked coconut is easy to eat. The natural white flakes not only add flavor, but a host of health benefits that can provide energy and reduce the life of some viruses. However, if you cook with coconut flakes often, you may find the white color boring. One way to make these fruity flakes more visually versatile is by dyeing them. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Pour 1 cup of coconut flakes into a medium-sized glass bowl. A glass bowl will not stain when the dye is added.

2
Squirt two drops of liquid food coloring into the bowl. Work the dye into the flakes using your wooden spoon. Move the coconut back and forth in the center of the bowl, then in small circles.

-
3
Add one or two more drops of color for a more intense color. Continue to work the coconut around the bowl.
-
4
Tear a piece of wax paper from the roll. The piece should be long enough to cover the baking pan.
-
5
Spread the coconut on the paper-covered pan to allow for quicker drying. Allow coconut flakes to dry for 2 to 3 minutes before using them in your recipe.
