1
Select a pattern. A good way to judge the best pattern for you to use is by thinking of the dresses you wear most often. Whether they are fitted, flowing, low or high-necked, they represent the style which you feel most comfortable wearing. Pick a pattern similar in style to ensure that you feel at ease in your final gown. Additionally, check the sewing skill level indicated on the pattern envelope. Do not select a dress above your skill level, as it will lead to a frustrating sewing process.

2
Select your fabric. The pattern you chose will influence the fabric you choose, whether the dress requires flowing organza or structured duchess satin. Find the necessary amount of material on the back of the pattern envelope. Keep in mind, however, that if you are not an experienced seamstress or are trying a pattern style for the first time, it is best to create a mock-up of your dress before beginning. The mock-up is made out of inexpensive fabric, such as muslin or toile.

3
Measure yourself at the bust, waist and hips and record your measurements. Look on your pattern envelope to determine the pattern size which best corresponds with your body type and cut out that size from the paper patterns. Pin the paper pattern pieces to your fabric, adhering to the layout cutting guidelines found on the first or second page of your pattern's instructions.
-
4
Cut out the fabric in accordance with the pattern and finish the edges to keep them from unravelling. Pin the pieces together and sew them as indicated by the pattern's instructions. If you need to adjust the seams, let the material out or take the seams in as needed. If the gown needs adjusting at the back, ask a friend to assist you in pinning the material. Sew the necessary seams and trim away the excess fabric.

5
Sew the lining together and make any necessary adjustments. Sew the necklines of the gown and lining together, keeping right sides together. Flip the lining to the inside of the garment to give the neckline a smooth, finished edge.
-
6
Hem the gown and install any necessary fastenings. Try on the dress once more to ensure that the fit is still correct.
-
7
Embellish the gown as you see fit, sewing any beads, pearls or crystals on by hand.
