How to Prevent Traffic Shaping on uTorrent

The uTorrent BitTorrent client contains an encryption feature that can encrypt incoming and outgoing BitTorrent traffic, preventing your Internet service provider from detecting it as BitTorrent traffic and reducing its speed. Many ISPs detect unencrypted BitTorrent traffic and perform traffic shaping on it, throttling users' downloads. You can enable the encryption feature, which is off by default, to use only encrypted outgoing and incoming connections, which can't be traffic-shaped. ISPs and network administrators could still slow your connection speeds, however, by throttling all traffic going to your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Options" menu at the top of the uTorrent window and select "Preferences."

    • 2

Click "BitTorrent" at the left side of the Preferences window.

    • 3

Click the "Outgoing" box under Protocol Encryption and select "Forced."

    • 4

Clear the "Allow Incoming Legacy Connections" check box by clicking it if it's checked.

    • 5

Click the "OK" button to save your settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • BitTorrent encryption only prevents third parties from detecting a connection as a BitTorrent connection. Encryption doesn't hide your IP address or personal information while downloading from BitTorrent. Only use uTorrent to download content that you have permission to download.
