How to Collect Metadata in XML

For website operators, collecting metadata and serving metadata is an important way of improving the user experience. To put it simply, metadata is a set of data that's collected or generated and embedded within a file. Image files from digital cameras have metadata, for example, embedded inside the raw image files that contain information on the image size, date and time it was taken, as well as the device used to capture the image. Conceptually, metadata is a bit ambiguous, but an easy way to boil it down is to think of it as data about data. Extensible Markup Language, or XML, is a popular metadata storage mechanism because it is a customizable markup language that developers can tailor to their specific web application needs.
