How to Sew a Skirt Out of a Pillowcase

Not only will your skirt be the only one around, but if you can scrounge up a pillow case it will hardly cost you a dollar to sew this adorable skirt. If you are in the mood for a summer look, find a pillow case with a flowery pattern on it. If you are preparing a winter wardrobe, find a dark colored or even a flannel pillow case for this project.

1
Measure the circumference of your waist right below your belly button. Write down this measurement for reference. If your hips are very narrow, subtract a half-inch from your measurement so that the skirt does not slide right off.
-
2
Measure the length beginning just below your belly button down to the point that you would like the skirt to end, anywhere above or below your knees. Add an inch to this measurement for the elastic casing, and write the final measurement down.

3
Lay the pillow case flat with the opening facing you. Iron the pillow case to eliminate wrinkles.
-
4
Measure the pillow case from the opening of the pillow case down to the place where you would like the skirt to end. Cut the pillow case right across at the point of your measurement.
-
5
Fold under the just-cut edges of the pillow case by an inch. Sew the fold at the bottom of the folded-under cut edge, leaving an inch of the fold not sewn. This will form a sleeve around the skirt into which you will insert the elastic.
-
6
Iron the casing that you just creating so the top of the skirt has a clean-looking crease.
-
7
Cut a strip of elastic that is as long as your waist measurement. Stick a safety pin into one end of the elastic. Use the safety pin to guide the elastic through the sleeve in the waist of the skirt. Once you reach the opening at the other end, tug both of the ends of elastic out of the sleeve and overlap them one quarter of an inch.
-
8
Sew the overlapping part of the elastic securely together. Try on the skirt to ensure that the elastic is not too loose or too tight. If it is not a good fit, take the stitching out of the elastic and adjust it. Once the elastic is sewn at the right fit, sew the last open inch of casing shut.
