Configure your webcam as both a video and audio device.

To use Skype to make telephone calls, have audio chats or video chats with sound, you need some type of microphone as an input device. Many webcams include a built-in microphone that eliminates the need for a separate microphone. Although you can still use a separate microphone if you want, you can change Skype's audio settings so that it uses your camera's microphone as the default input device.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your camera to your computer if you haven't already done so. Launch Skype and sign in.

    • 2

Click Skype's "Call" menu, then select "Audio Settings" in the list. Click the "Microphone" drop-down list and select your camera in the list. Test your settings by saying something into the camera's microphone. If the "Volume" bar shows a moving green indicator, your camera's microphone can pick up sounds correctly.

    • 3

Click "Save" near the lower right corner of the window to set your camera's microphone as the microphone input.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want Skype to automatically adjust your microphone's volume during calls, click the check box next to "Automatically Adjust Microphone Settings" when you configure your default input device.
