How to Close a Sales Letter

How to Close a Sales Letter thumbnail
An effective closing mobilizes the motivation you laid out in the rest of the sales letter.

An effective sales letter offers the reader something of value. It focuses on how the reader can benefit from the product or service the letter promotes. To get a greater number of sales out of your letter, end it by calling the reader to action. This "call to action" prompts the reader to do something about the letter, like contacting the company by the phone number or email listed. Without a call to action, a reader may find a sales letter interesting but not think twice about it and lay it aside.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the final sentence of the sales letter with a command, such as "Call us now" or "Act now." A command is always written in the imperative voice, which directly addresses the person listening or reading. The implied subject in "Call us now" is "you," the reader of the letter.

    • 2

Explain why the reader should act. Incentives like special offers and free samples provide a reader with the motivation to act on the sales letter.

    • 3

Provide the reader with a reason to act soon. A statement such as "this offer ends soon" or "supplies won't last" motivates the reader into making a decision about the product or service quickly, before the deal ends. This prevents the reader from pushing aside the letter and forgetting about it.

    • 4

Instruct the reader how to act on the offer. Direct them to email or call you. Provide your contact information somewhere clearly visible, such as the top center of the letter.

    • 5

Write a simple closing word or phrase such as "Sincerely" or "Best" and sign and type your name below.
