This straight-A report card would yield a 4.0 GPA.

Grade point average, or GPA, gives your teachers and college admissions officials a quick idea of your academic performance by assigning a number between 0 and 4, representing letter grades F to A. Throughout high school, your GPA is cumulative, so you can calculate your GPA by using the grades on all your high school report cards. There are two types of GPA: weighted and non-weighted.

Instructions

  1. Non-weighted

    • 1

      Assign each letter grade a number. 0 is F, 1 is D, 2 is C, 3 is B and 4 is A.

    • 2

Add these numbers. For example, if you received three A grades and a B grade for one semester and two B grades and two C grades the next, you would add 4 + 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2. This gives you your total grade points.

    • 3

Divide your total by the number of classes you took. In this example, you have 25 grade points. Divide it by 8, because you've taken eight classes. You have a non-weighted GPA of 3.125, rounded up to 3.13.

    Weighted

    • 4

Assign each class letter grade a number as before and multiply it by the number of credit hours that class is worth. For example, a 3-credit class in which you made an A is worth 12 points.

    • 5

Repeat this process for all classes.

    • 6

Add the grade points to get your grade point total. If you have a 2-credit class in which you received a B and two 3-credit classes in which you received an A, you have 30 grade points.

    • 7

Divide by the total number of credit hours. Using the above schedule, you have 8 credit hours. 30 divided by 8 is 3.75. You have a weighted GPA of 3.75.
