How to Build a Clothes Hanger
Clothes hangers are made from wood, plastic and metal. The simplest homemade clothes hanger is one made with wire. Wire is easily bent by hand. The use of a protractor allows for an angled bend. Plastic coated wire adds a protective barrier between the clothing and the hanger. This prevents rust from forming on the wire and creating a spot on the clothes. A 1/2-inch dowel with a wire hanger inserted in the center is another option available for a homemade clothes hanger.

1
Measure and cut a piece of 12-gauge plastic coated wire 30-inches long.
-
2
Place one end of the wire on the center of a 1-inch pipe. Roll the wire halfway around the pipe to form the hook on the clothes hanger.
-
-
3
Measure 3 inches down from the bottom of the curl in the wire. Make a 15 degree bend in the wire that points toward the end of the hook.
-
4
Measure 8 1/2 inches from the 15 degree bend. Place the protractor on the bent wire. Bend the wire at 120 degrees to form the bottom of the clothes hanger.
-
5
Measure 16 inches along the straight bottom of the clothes hanger. Place the protractor on the straight bottom wire. Bend the wire on the 16-inch mark at a 40 degree angle.
-
6
Measure 8 1/2 inches. Bend the wire at a 15 degree angle and place the last 3 inches of the wire along the shaft of the hook.
-
7
Wrap the 3-inch wire segment around the shaft of the hook to hold in place.
