Organizing college recommendations is the first step in the application process.

Applying to college requires students to submit letters of recommendation. Many students apply to as many as 10 schools, and often each one requires letters of recommendation. Instructions

    • 1

Create a brag sheet to accompany requests for letters of recommendation. List clubs, sports and other activities for all four years. Indicate what field you are interesting in studying so the recommendation can be tailored to highlight relevant qualities and attributes.

    • 2

Make a folder for each college you are applying to. Label the folder with the school name and what is required in terms of recommendations.

    • 3

Address legal envelopes with the schools' admission offices and attach necessary postage. Place legal envelopes with brag sheets inside of each folder. Insert any additional paperwork such as questionnaires if they are required.

    • 4

Create a large manila envelope for each person writing a reference once deadlines are approaching. Label the manila envelope with the teacher's name, the schools being applied to and their deadlines. Take all materials from the school folders the teacher will need and place them inside the manila envelope.

    • 5

Hand out the manila envelopes to each person writing the recommendations at least one month in advance. Explain what the teacher needs to send for each school you are applying to and point out any early deadlines.

    • 6

Follow up with each teacher or person writing the recommendation a week before deadlines are due. Make sure that all letters have been sent out and that the teacher does not have any questions.
