How to Rig in "Maya"
Maya is one of the premier 3-D modeling and animation applications on the market. Content produced in Maya is seen in movies and video games. One of the most important tasks when working in Maya is to rig a figure for movement in animation. You might have thought only a professional could do this, but the process is actually quite simple.

1
Start the Maya application. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog that appears, locate and open a model you want to rig.
-
2
Go to the drop-down menu to the left of the icons at the top and choose "Animation." Select "Skeleton" from the menu and choose "Joint Tool."
-
-
3
Go to the side view of the model. From the center of the figure, start clicking to lay out a series of joints to define the spine to the head joints. Click "Enter" to close that set of joints.
-
4
Repeat this process to produce joints from the center of the body to the lower spine. Repeat this to produce joints for the arms and legs.
-
5
Select the joint you want to be the "Parent" joint. Hold down the "Shift" key and click to select the end points of the other joint groups.
-
6
Go to the front view, move the single leg and arm joints you have over to the right arm and leg. Select "Skeleton" from the menu and choose "Mirror Joint." In the dialog, choose the correct axes and click "Apply." This will place copies of these joints in the other left arm and leg. You now have a rigged figure.
