Dye yarn using basic kitchen equipment.

When you are using yarn for a craft project, you may not want to use drab or plain-colored yarn. One solution is to dye the yarn with fabric dye. You do not need to dye yarn in a stock pot over a stove. Instead, dye yarn more simply by using a Crock-Pot. When you use a Crock-Pot to dye yarn, the yarn can be heated and dyed in a more gradual way, enabling you to leave the yarn in the Crock-Pot as you complete other tasks.

Instructions

    • 1

      Fill a Crock-Pot three-fourths full with water.

    • 2

Pour 8 oz. of liquid fabric dye into the Crock-Pot. Stir the dye solution with a spoon for one minute to combine the two ingredients completely.

    • 3

Submerge up to two skeins of yarn into the dye water, and push them down with the spoon. Place the top on the Crock-Pot and set it to low. Allow the yarn to steep for four hours.

    • 4

Rinse the skeins of yarn out under clear water for five minutes to remove any excess fabric dye. Squeeze out any excess water.

    • 5

Lay the yarn skeins out on a towel to dry for six hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep fabric dye out of the reach of children.

  • Always clean out the Crock-Pot thoroughly after using it to dye yarn or fabrics.
