How to Fasten a Fiddle Chin Rest
Installing a chin rest on a fiddle or violin is a simple procedure that only takes a couple of minutes. A chin rest makes holding and playing the fiddle much easier and more comfortable. Violinists and fiddlers typically rest the violin between their chins and shoulders as they play. Violin chin rests have small cup-like designs to rest the chin. This allows the fiddle player to focus her attention on the music rather than worrying about the fiddle slipping out of position

Select a chin rest for the fiddle. Chin rests are available in a few different styles. One style clamps directly over the tail piece of the fiddle. A second type clamps to the base of the fiddle to the left of the tail piece.

Experiment with the metal clamps a few times until you are comfortable with loosening and tightening them. Chin rests are secured to the fiddle with two clamps. The clamps are adjusted either with turners on the clamp or with a eyeglasses-size screwdriver.

Place the chin rest on the fiddle. Select the best location for the chin rest that suits your technique and playing style.

Tighten the clamps until the chin rest is stable and secure. Avoid making the clamps too tight to prevent scratching or damaging the fiddle. However, the chin rest needs to be tight enough so that it doesn't move while you play the fiddle.
