DIY Programmer's Desk

DIY Programmer's Desk thumbnail
Pine is often used to build different kinds of desks quickly.

Even computer programmers need a fair amount of desk space for organizing manuals, notes and computer software. A desk that fits a programmer well will also have a built-in monitor stand to allow for maximum desk space. A simple programming desk design will allow for all of these aspects and will only require a few boards and a few pieces of plywood. You can build this type of desk easily in a wood shop with little woodworking experience.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • 2 plywood sheets, 3/4 by 22 by 32 inches
  • 5 pine boards, 1 by 6 by 35 inches

Instructions

    • 1

Set two plywood sheets on their 32-inch edges so they lie parallel to each other and 35 inches apart. Hold four 35-inch boards perpendicularly between the sheets so they lie flush with one pair of 22-inch edges. Screw through the plywood and into the boards using a screw gun and wood screws so two screws enter the end of each board. These boards make of your programmers desk top and the plywood make up the sides.

    • 2

Position the desk upright, and hold the last 35-inch board between the sides at a right angle so it sits 6 inches above the ground and lies flush with a pair of 32-inch edges. This board will become the back support to your desk. Screw through the sides and into this board using four screws.

    • 3

Set two 6-inch boards on edge, parallel and 32 inches apart. Set a 33 1/2-inch board on top of the 6-inch boards so the corners are flush, and screw it down using four screws. This board will become the monitor stand of your programming desk.

    • 4

Set the monitor stand on top of the desk. Position it so the 6-inch boards are flush with the ends of the 35-inch boards between the sides and it lies above the back support. Screw through the bottom side of the desktop and into the 6-inch boards. You have now completed your computer programmer's desk.
