How to Troubleshoot FFDshow
FFDshow is a decoding filter that enables playback for certain digital media files in DirectShow media players. The component can decode video that's encoded with WMV, DivX, XviD, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and H.264 compression, and audio that's encoded with MP3, AC3, DTS and Ogg Vorbis compression. FFDShow can also read digital media files that are formatted with subtitle tracks. Because FFDshow is an open-source component, it can be downloaded and installed for free. But if users encounter playback issues with the compression formats FFDshow should support, they can check some things to get the decoding filter to work properly.

1
Make sure the digital media file is being opened and streamed in a compatible media player. FFDshow only works with applications that are based on the DirectShow multimedia framework -- such as Windows Media Player, Winamp and Media Player Classic. The decoding filter is not compatible with applications such as QuickTime, VLC or GOM Player.

2
Check that your installation of FFDshow is configured to decode the compression formats you're trying to play. Launch the "FFDshow Audio Decoder Configuration" menu and the "FFDshow Video Decoder Configuration" and select the "Codecs" section to examine which compression formats have been assigned to FFDshow for decoding.

3
Check your system to see whether other codec packages such as K-Lite or CCCP are installed. These utilities were developed to read a lot of the same compression formats as FFDshow. This overlap in functionality can compromise decoding performance. Either remove one of these conflicting codec packages from your system or make use of a codec management program such as RadLight Filter Manager and Filmerit to assign a specific decoding filter to a specific compression format.

4
Verify that the tracks in your digital media file have been encoded with a compression format that's supported by FFDshow in the first place. Codec identification programs such as GSpot and VideoInspector can analyze a digital media file and identify its codecs.
