How to Make a Strapless Tube Top

When the sun is shining, one of the best ways to not have tan lines on your shoulders is to wear a tube top. This allows your shoulders to experience a level of sunlight consistent to the rest of your body, which prevents or eliminates tan lines. For those on a budget, a strapless tube top can be made using an old T-shirt and a bit of sewing. A T-shirt fits loosely, so you need to modify the T-shirt to prevent the top from falling down. However, by measuring and sewing, you can easily accomplish this.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a T-shirt with a pattern you like. Put the T-shirt on and check that it fits snugly. Draw lines in chalk where you want to cut the shirt across the chest and across the midriff. Then draw another line half an inch above the chest line and half an inch below the midriff line. Ask a friend to help you do the same with the back.

    • 2

Remove the T-shirt and use the scissors to cut along the top-most and bottom-most lines. Cut the lines on the front of the shirt first, and then cut the ones at the back separately. Be careful not to make any holes when crossing the seam. Cut slowly and carefully to ensure you have a neat line. You can rectify any slight mistakes when you sew the hem.

Turn the T-shirt inside out, and fold the extra material above and below the remaining lines inwards. Use pins to pin the material to the inside of the top. Take the needle and thread and sew a seam along the extra material. Remove the pins, and repeat for each of the remaining three chalk lines.

Put the top on to test the fit. If the top is too loose, then pinch the material on one side until it is the desired fit. Use a safety pin to hold this pinched material securely together. Continue to pinch and pin the material all the way up one side of the top until the top fits snugly.

Remove the top, which should still be turned inside out. Sew a seam across the base of the pinched fabric, running from the bottom of the tube top to the top edge. When this seam is sewn, try the top on again to test the fit. Remove the top and use the scissors to cut off the remaining fabric on the seam you have just sewn. Turn the top inside out again so it is back to normal and it is ready to wear.
