How to Crochet a Hand

When crocheting dolls, the hands and arms are worked together in a single unit, which attaches at the shoulder. Typically, there is a ball or bulb shape at the end of the arm for the hand, a slight narrowing at the wrist and then a long crocheted cylinder for the arm. If the doll is wearing an outfit with long sleeves, the yarn color may be changed at the wrist to make the sleeves of the shirt. Crochet begins at the hand, and then works back to the shoulder. The length and diameter of the arm can be adjusted to meet your projects needs. This pattern is for a doll whose finished height totals 14 inches and has a defined thumb.

Instructions

    • 1

Chain 2. This is the tip of the fingers, and the center of the hand. The rest of the hand and arm will be worked circularly, so you will never turn.

    • 2

Work six single crochet in the second chain from the hook. This forms a circle and completes round one.

    • 3

Increase, or put two single crochet in each stitch around. This will complete round two with a total of 12 single crochet.

    • 4

Increase in every other stitch around, putting one single crochet in the first stitch and two single crochet in the next. Complete round three with a total of 18 single crochet.

    • 5

Single crochet in each stitch around. Round four will contain a total of 18 single crochet.

    • 6

Single crochet in the first two stitches and increase in the third. Repeat this pattern around. Complete round five with a total of 24 single crochet.

    • 7

Single crochet around the circle, for a total of 24 single crochet twice, to form rounds six and seven.

    • 8

Single crochet in stitch one and two and three and decrease in stitch four and five. Repeat this pattern around. To decrease, pull up a loop in stitch four, and then pull of a loop in stitch five, without working either loop off the hook, so that there are three loops on the hook. Then yarn over and work all three loops off at once, like a single crochet. This will complete round 8, with a total of 18 single crochet.

    • 9

Work two single crochet in the first stitch, four single crochet in the second stitch and two single crochet in the third stitch to form the thumb. Single crochet in each stitch around, the rest of the way around the hand. This completes round nine, with a total of 26 single crochet.

    • 10

Single crochet in the first three stitches in the round. Work two single crochet in each of the next five stitches. Single crochet in each of the other stitches around. This completes the round for a total of 31 single crochet.

    • 11

Single crochet in the first three stitches. Decrease the next ten stitches, in pairs, so that they are reduced to five stitches. Single crochet in each of the remaining stitches around for a total of 26 stitches in the completed round.

    • 12

Decrease by combining the first two stitches. Decrease again by combining the next four stitches. Decrease a third time by combining the next two stitches. This will pucker the top of the thumb, to create a more realistic thumb joint. Then, single crochet in each remaining stitch around for a total of 18 stitches.

    • 13

Single crochet in each stitch around for a total of 18 stitches to complete round thirteen.

    • 14

Single crochet in the first two stitches, decrease to combine the following two stitches. Repeat this pattern around for a total of 12 stitches to complete row fourteen. This forms the wrist of the doll, and marks the end of the hand.

    • 15

Change colors if you want the arm of the doll colored to match its clothing, otherwise just continue. Single crochet around the ring putting a single crochet in each of the 12 stitches around. Repeat this for as many rows as it takes to reach the length desired.
