How to Build in "GuildWars"

In "Guild Wars," the term "build" may refer to an update of the game itself or the formation of a party, but most often it refers to a character's individual skills and abilities based on that character's professions and attributes. The character's build decides how the character needs to be played and what role they play within any given group. Since "Guild Wars" allows single characters to have two professions, there is the opportunity to make both specific and generalized builds. The game also allows players to change their character's second build, meaning they aren't permanently locked into one build.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what you want the character to focus on. The character's build changes greatly based on whether you want to focus on player-versus-player (PvP) or player-versus-environment (PvE) combat. Characters may be created specifically for PvP and start at Level 20 before building from there; PvE characters begin at the first level but have easier access to secondary professions. In the case of PvE, choose whether the character will be primarily fighting solo or in groups.

    • 2

Choose a primary profession for the character. The selection of primary professions depends on which expansion of "Guild Wars" is installed at the time of the character's creation and where the character is meant to be from. The primary profession offers a number of attributes for the character, one of which is the primary attribute.

    • 3

Choose a secondary profession which best uses the attributes of the primary one. For example, a Warrior may not be able to make use of Elementalist abilities due to the primary profession's lack of energy for the secondary profession's abilities. PvP characters secondary professions can be changed on their own while PvE characters must undergo a quest to change their secondary profession.

    • 4

Gain skills either through PvE or PvP methods. Both types of characters have different ways of learning or unlocking skills, however gaining a skill with a PvE character means that skill is permanently learned for all PvP characters created on that account.

    • 5

Become familiar with the enemies that will be encountered. This can only be done in PvE situations since there's no way of knowing which opponents are going to be encountered in a PvP setting. First, consider if the enemies are melee or casters, then what types of skills they use, such as enchantment removal, high damage, long casting times, interrupts, knockdowns and so forth. Finally, learn what types of skills can be used to counter these. In solo PvE settings, find a balance of offensive and defensive skills so the character can defeat enemies quickly without fear of being defeated.

    • 6

Select skills from the Skills and Attributes panel and drag them to the Skill Bar while in staging areas. A maximum of eight skills can be selected by a character at one time from both professions; this includes one elite skill and up to three PvE-only skills for PvE characters. While on missions or in arenas or explorable areas, skills can't be changed so choose skills which best deal with the enemies encountered or fulfill the role needed in the party.

    • 7

Change secondary profession and skills as needed. Always focus on professions and skills which maximize the strengths of the primary profession and can make use of that profession's attributes.
