How to Do Shadow Quilting
Shadow quilting has an ominous sound to it. In reality, it is a method of quilting where the quilter stitches various things on top of their quilt. The quilter then covers the design with a transparent fabric. It is an easy way to quilt and, when finished, has a delicate ethereal feel to it.
Things You'll Need
- Needle
- Thread
- 1/4 yard. plain fabric
- Ruler
- One piece felt, approximately 12 inches by 12 inches
- 1/4 yard sheer fabric
- Scissors
- Straight pins

Use a ruler to measure and then cut out two 8 inch squares from the plain fabric. These will be the front and back of the square.

Cut out five ovular shapes from the felt. They should be 1 inch to 2 inches in diameter. They may be placed in a flower pattern or abstractly. Place these on top of one of the squares of plain fabric. Using stick pins, pin the ovals to the fabric.

Use small, even stitches to attach each oval to the fabric. Repeat this until all five ovals are attached.

Cut out two 9 inch squares using the transparent fabric. Line the sheer fabric up with the plain fabric, there will be a 1 inch overlap.

Use a needle and thread to attach the sheer fabric to the plain fabric by sewing the outline of the ovals.

Tips & Warnings
Although this article demonstrates this technique using felt, the quilter may also use non-traditional materials. These materials can include chains, sequins, ribbon or any other lightweight items that inspire the quilter.
