How to Qualify for SSI Benefits for Hearing Loss

The Supplemental Security Income program provides a monthly cash benefit to eligible applicants. The SSI program is administered by the U.S. Social Security Administration. Although the SSI program has similar eligibility requirements to the Social Security disability program, approval for SSI benefits is not dependent on the applicant's previous work history. If you have suffered a hearing loss, you might qualify to receive a monthly SSI benefit check.

Instructions

    • 1

Have your hearing loss evaluated to determine whether it is likely to meet the SSI program requirement that the recipient be disabled. To qualify for SSI, an applicant younger than age 18 must have a medical or mental condition that results in a marked and severe functional limitation that is expected to last for longer than one year or to result in death. If you are older than 18, the same duration requirement applies but your condition must also result in your inability to do any substantial gainful activity.

Calculate your monthly income and the value of your resources. Resources include money in bank accounts, cash on hand, vehicles and personal property. Your resources cannot exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple. Your income will be relevant as the maximum SSI monthly benefit amount for an individual as of 2011 is $674. If your monthly income exceeds that amount, you might not qualify for benefits.

    • 3

Gather documents that you'll likely need when applying. The required documents vary, but most applicants need a Social Security card, proof of age and citizenship or alien status as well as proof of income, resources and living arrangements. You will also need proof of your hearing loss and your work history.

Contact the SSA by telephone or in person to apply. You cannot apply for SSI benefits online.

Tips & Warnings

  • As a general rule, if you earn more than $1,000 a month, the SSA assumes you are capable of performing substantial gainful activity.

  • It typically takes three to four months for a decision to be made regarding your application.

  • You have a right to appeal if your application is denied.
