Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape

  • Paper

  • 2 1/2 yards of green fabric

  • Pins

  • Scissors

  • Sewing machine

  • Iron

  • 1/2 yard of green felt

  • 1/2 yard of brown felt

  • Red feather

Make a Shirt

Step 1: Measure for the DIY Halloween Costume Pattern

Measure around the shoulders of the person who will wear the Halloween costume. Place the measuring tape around the chest, arms and back, with arms down. Divide this measurement by four to find the "pattern width." For example, if the circumference around the shoulders is 40 inches, the pattern width would be 10 inches.

Step 2: Cut Out the Pattern

Print out the pattern pieces and enlarge them until the pattern width on the pattern is the same measurement as the pattern width from step 1. Cut out the paper pattern pieces and place them on the green fabric as shown. Cut one front piece, one back piece, and one collar.

Step 3: Sew Front to Back

Pin the front shirt piece to the back, with right sides together. Sew the shoulder seams and side seams 1/2 inch from the edge.

Tip

Flannel fabric and felt are good choices for this Halloween costume as they will not fray at cut edges, so no seam finishes are needed. If a seam finish is necessary to prevent fraying on a different fabric, use pinking shears to trim the seam allowances of your Peter Pan costume.

Step 4: Sew the Collar

Place the right side of the collar on the right side of the shirt at the neckline. Match up the notches on the front and back collar. Sew 1/2 inch from the edge.

Turn the collar up and press the seam allowance toward the body of the shirt. Stitch on the body of the shirt, 1/8 inch from the neckline seam, including the seam allowance in the stitch. This is called an "understitch" which keeps the collar in place.

Tip

One of the easiest costume ideas for a Peter Pan throw together outfit, start with an oversized green T-shirt with a collar, cut off the sleeves and hem it with a zigzag pattern.

Make a DIY Peter Pan Hat

Step 1: Measure and Cut

Place the tape measure at the wearer's forehead, where the hat will sit and measure the wearer's head. Divide that measurement by two. Place the tape measure on top of the felt and draw a triangle around the tape measure, following the photograph. Cut two identical triangle pieces.

Step 2: Sew the Hat

With both pattern pieces together, sew along the top and back sides of the hat, leaving the bottom open.

Step 3: Turn Up the End

Turn the hat right-side out. Fold up the back side a couple inches.

Step 4: Add a Red Feather

Cut two small holes on one side of the hat, close to the fold. Place the feather through the cut holes and add a small amount of felt glue to secure the feather in place.

Make Shoe Covers

Step 1: Cut the Pieces

Measure the length of the shoe that the shoe cover will be worn over. Place that measurement flat on the felt, and draw the shape of a shoe following the image, leaving 3/4 inch allowance at either end of the tape measure. Cut four identical pieces out of felt to make one pair of shoe covers.

Step 2: Sew the Pieces Together

Place two pattern pieces together and sew along the back edge and the top front of the shoe. Stop at the ankle. Sew together the second pair of pattern pieces in the same way.

Step 3: Fold Over the Flap

Fold the flap over the boot. The wearer's foot goes through the ankle opening. The shoe cover can be worn with any type of shoe.

Finishing Touches

A pair of green tights is the ultimate addition to a Peter Pan costume. Leggings will also work. Look in the hosiery department as well as athletic wear to find the perfect shade of green. Tie leather trim around the waist or use a brown belt to cinch in the shirt at the waist of this Halloween costume.

Tip

Bring your posse along and have them dress up in DIY Halloween costumes for cosplay. Costume ideas can include Wendy, Tinkerbell, Captain Hook, Smee and the Lost Boys
