How to Knit a Textured Scarf
A textured scarf adds some visual appeal to a wardrobe staple. Scarves are quick to knit and can easily be customized to match an outfit. Both the novice and experienced knitter can knit this simple pattern, which uses basic knit and purl stitches to create its appealing texture. Since it is suitable for both men and women, you can make several in varying colors to give as gifts to family and friends.
Things You'll Need
- 600 to 700 yards of worsted-weight yarn
- Size 7 knitting needles
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Instructions

Cast on 35 stitches.

Work row 1 by knitting every stitch.

Work row 2 by purling every stitch.

Work row 3 by knitting the first stitch, purling the second, knitting the third, purling the fourth and continuing to alternate across the row for a K1, P1 pattern row.

Work row 4 by purling every stitch.

Repeat rows 1 through 4 until your scarf is about 56 inches long.

Bind off all stitches loosely.

Cut your yarn, leaving a 5-inch tail.

Using a yarn needle, weave the tail into the scarf to hide the ends.

Tips & Warnings
Alternate colors every 8 rows for a striped scarf.
If you use sport-weight yarn, plan on needing about 800 yards, use size 5 needles and case on 43 stitches.
Only use wool only if the person who will be wearing the scarf has no allergies to wool or other animal fibers.
For a wider scarf, cast on more stitches, for a thinner scarf, cast on fewer. Just remember to use an odd number of stitches for the pattern to be accurate.
