How to Create a GChat Room

Google Talk (often referred to as "GChat") is the instant messaging service from Google, built into the GMail webmail service in 2005. Unlike other instant messaging services, Google does not host public chat rooms. The company did, however, add group chat functionality into the service in 2007. This means you can create an ad hoc chat room by selecting a group of your friends from the chat list. The process is simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Start menu and launch your web browser. Navigate to GMail and log into your account.

    • 2

Click the user name in your "Chat" list (on the left-hand side of your GMail inbox) you wish to start a conversation with. A new IM window will open in the lower right-hand corner of the browser window.

    • 3

Click the "Add People to This Chat" button in the IM window. The icon looks like a silhouette with a "+" symbol. A small text box opens.

    • 4

Enter the name of the additional people you wish to add to the chat to create a group chat, and click "Invite." Repeat for each additional person.
