How to Make Hairpin Lace

How to Make Hairpin Lace thumbnail
Use yarn, a crochet hook and crochet fork to make hairpin lace.

Crochet consists of much more than single crochet, double crochet and triple crochet. This art lends itself well to lacy and delicate items, especially when you use a special tool like a crochet fork, used for hairpin lace. This style of crochet is made up of loops held together in the center with a series of single crochet stitches. Hairpin lace is suitable for items like scarves or bedspreads. To work a hairpin lace project, you need to be comfortable with holding two tools in your hands as you manipulate the yarn, crochet hook and crochet fork.

Instructions

    • 1

Loop the yarn around each prong of the crochet fork. Tie a tight knot in the center.

    • 2

Grip the crochet fork in your left or non-dominant hand and hold the crochet hook in your right or dominant hand.

    • 3

Bring the working yarn around the right prong from front to back. Insert the crochet hook in between the two strands of yarn -- loops -- on the left side of the crochet fork. Yarn over, draw the loop through and crochet one chain stitch.

    • 4

Turn the hook upside down, leaving the loop on the hook. Move the handle of the hook through the top center of the fork, to the side of the fork away from you. Turn the crochet fork one-half turn from the right to the left, and wrap the yarn around the right-side prong of the fork

    • 5

Hold the hook in your right hand, with the hooked end pointed up, and slip the hook in the new loop on the left prong. Yarn over and draw a loop through, for two loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw the loop through the two loops on the hook -- for one single crochet completed.

    • 6

Continue from the point where you turn the hook upside down and turn the crochet fork from the right to the left, after you complete each stitch and work a single crochet in the loop on the left prong.

    • 7

Fasten off and cut the yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail when you have finished crocheting your hairpin lace. Draw the end of yarn through the loop on your hook, pulling it tight.

Tips & Warnings

  • Slip a stitch marker into the work about every 25 to 30 loops to make it easier to count the loops.

  • When you have filled the fork with loops, slip the bottom bar off the hook and carefully slide all but the last four or five loops off both prongs of the fork. Put the bottom bar back onto the fork and roll up the strip of loops, securing them with a rubber band. Continue working new loops until you have a piece of fabric the required length for your project.
