How to Design Your Own Superhero Cape
Most kids are fascinated by superheroes and their ability to overcome huge obstacles with special powers. Consequently, the superhero costume is a favorite one at Halloween. You can work with your child to create an original superhero character, then design a cape that his or her superhero would wear. Use items that you may already have on hand to reduce the cost of both the costume and the cape.

Preparation
-
1
Get together all of the material scraps or old clothing that you have around the house.
-
2
Decide what colors you and your child want to use for your superhero, based on the material or old clothing that you have gathered. Remember that most superheroes wear bright colored clothing and capes, such as red, blue and yellow.

3
Measure your child around the back of the neck for the collar and down the back, for the length of the cape. Also measure from where the cape will hit the shoulders to the front of the neck, where the cape should tie in place.
Draw

4
Make the lines for the shape of your cape on paper with a pencil. Shape your cape into the traditional cape triangle, make it rounded or add jagged edges along the bottom to give your superhero a unique look.
-
5
Shape the collar of your cape on paper. Some superheroes have only a straight, hemmed collar, like Superman, while you may elect to create a specialized collar. Decide which type of collar best fits your superhero.
-
6
Design the type of cape tie that you would like, such as a thick or thin, spaghetti tie.
-
7
Add specific design elements to your cape. These may include painted lightning bolts, large letters that represent the name of your superhero or perhaps a glitter pattern of your choosing.

Tips & Warnings
Instead of drawing out your design, use material, such as a towel and fabric you have on hand to design your superhero cape as you construct it.
