How to Connect a Tattoo Machine Foot Pedal

How to Connect a Tattoo Machine Foot Pedal thumbnail
The tattoo machine and foot pedal run through the same power source.

Tattoo machines operate by applying pressure to a foot pedal, also known as a foot switch. It allows the artist the freedom to use both hands when tattooing. Both the foot switch and the tattoo machine need to be plugged into a power source, which basically looks like a small generator, and this power source controls the speed of the needle action. Different portions of a tattoo should incorporate different needle speeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug your power source into an electrical outlet. Power sources can use up a lot of wattage so plug directly into the wall instead of into a multiple socket bar.

    • 2

Plug your foot switch into the mono socket on the power source. There will be two, but it doesn't matter which you use.

    • 3

Plug your clip cord into the other mono socket and attach the pronged end to the back post and frame of your tattoo machine.

    • 4

Adjust the speed of your needle action on the power source.

    • 5

Apply pressure to the foot switch and tattoo away.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a slower needle action for line work and faster for shading and coloring.

  • Always sterilize all of your tattoo equipment before using.
