Crocheting is a type of lace needlework accomplished with a crochet hook and yarn. Crocheting dates back to 17th century France; however, techniques developed across the globe and gained popularity in the United States in the mid-1800s. Crocheters today often learn basic crocheting terminology -- such as the abbreviations and instructional methods (see Resources 1) -- to crochet items such as shawls, tablecloths, shirts, dresses and doilies using crocheting patterns. Crochet a knit wrap shawl using a crochet pattern that resembles a knitting style, such as the no-chain double crochet; this technique results in even, flat rows. Your finished shawl will be approximately 25 inches long by 40 inches wide.

Things You'll Need

  • Crochet hook size 4.50mm (G)

Instructions

    • 1

Make the end of the yarn into a little circle with your fingers. Fold one side of the yarn down so that it lines up with the center of the circle. Pull the yarn through the center of the circle using the crochet hook. Tighten the loop until the yarn is taut around the hook and cinched into a little knot below. This is the first "chain," which is a term used to describe how nearly all crochet patterns begin and is also a filler step in many patterns.

    • 2

Wrap the yarn again around the backside of the crochet hook to do the second chain. Run it forward while nestled against the hook to "yarn over." Pull this piece of yarn through the previous loop chain that you made to create the second chain. Repeat this process to make a third chain.

    • 3

Yarn over to start the no-chain double crochet. Insert the hook under the two strands that make up the third chain from the hook. Bring the yarn over. Pull up a loop, yarn over, pull loop through one loop (three loops on the hook) and complete stitch as a normal double crochet (yarn over, pull through two loops) twice. The first stitch of the no-chain double crochet is complete.

    • 4

Yarn over. Insert the hook under two strands of the first chain you have made. Bring the yarn over. Pull the loop through this chain. Yarn over. Pull the loop through the chain. Yarn over. Pull the loop through one loop. At this point, there should be three loops on the hook.

    • 5

Complete the first stitch using a normal double crochet. To do a normal double crochet, bring the yarn over, pull through the second loop, and repeat this twice. The second stitch is complete.

    • 6

Repeat this stitch 48 times to create the first row. Since each stitch is approximately a half inch, 48 stitches will ensure that the shawl is 24 inches wide.

    • 7

Chain three times to turn to make the next row, completing with a regular double crochet. Make 80 rows total for the shawl to be 40 inches long. Fasten off with a double under woven slip knot to complete the final chain. Snip the tail of the yarn with the scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Print out the standard abbreviations for crochet patterns in order to make it easy to follow patterns that incorporate more than one stitch (see Resources 1).

  • The yarn weight and gauge of the hook can vastly change the size and look of crocheting. Follow instructions on a pattern regarding the yarn weight and hook size to ensure that the number of stitches will result in the promised size.

  • Novice crocheters may take up to 12 hours to complete this shawl.
