How to Be Preppy in Fashion

Polo shirts are common for men in achieving a preppy fashion look.

Preppy fashion signifies that your wardrobe closely resembles that of someone who attended a traditional preparatory school. Preparatory school wardrobe has been popularized among those who wish to display the appearance of an elite look. Many wardrobe options that are common to everyday men and women would be considered unacceptable as a part of the preppy look. Populate your wardrobe with items traditionally considered preppy to achieve this look on your own.

Preppy Fashion for Men

1. Add polo shirts to your collection. Colors such as green, pink, yellow, blue and purple are all acceptable colors as part of preppy fashion. Additionally, for cooler climates, consider adding cotton or cashmere sweaters to your collection. Cardigans, vests and V-neck sweaters are among many options for such a wardrobe. Button-down shirts are also recommended. Oxford button-down shirts are appropriate for less casual occasions.

2. Populate your pants options with chinos, jeans and shorts. "Chino" simply refers to chino cloth. Sample brands include Dockers, Eddie Bauer and Ralph Lauren. Add jeans to your collection of bottoms. Make sure the jeans are slim and straight cut. Consider folding the cuffs to achieve a more preppy look to your jeans. Any form of pleated, chino or cargo shorts will give you a preppy look. They work well with your button-down shorts or polos.

3. Wear jackets during springtime. Light windbreakers work best. For example, if you are playing golf or are on a boat cruise, consider wearing a weather-resistant pullover. Coats are appropriate during the fall or winter. Coat materials should be centered on tweed and wool. Wool peacoats work well because of the classic, preppy look, particularly when combined with a scarf and a pullover sweater.

4. Add espadrilles or slip-on boat shoes to complete the masculine preppy look.

Preppy Fashion for Women

1. Add polo and oxford shirts to your collection. Vary them between short and long sleeved.

2. Wear pencil skirts, short plaid skirts, nautical skirts or polo dresses. They should primarily be in pastel colors, khaki or tan. However, pleated skirts also work, particularly when paired with a brightly colored shirt.

3. Wear Bermuda shorts. These options fit well with a plain or patterned top. Jeans are also acceptable, unless they have any discolorations or rips in them.

4. Finish off your preppy look by adding ballet flats or ribbon flip-flips to the wardrobe. Leather high heels are also appropriate to achieve a more modern look. Finally, simple accessories, such as simple silver or gold pieces, work well.
