How to Cast on a Garter Scarf
A garter stitch scarf is a simple and rewarding knitting project. The only techniques you need to know are how to cast on, do knit stitches and bind off. You can use any type of cast on method for a scarf like this. The double cast-on method, also called the long-tail or continental cast-on, creates a strong yet supple bottom edge for your scarf and looks a lot like the binding off you'll do at the top. You'll want to cast on roughly 25 stitches to end up with a scarf that is 5 inches wide.
Instructions

1
Make a slip knot, leaving a 20-inch tail.
-
2
Put the slip knot on one of your needles and pull it so that the knot closely encircles the needle, but isn't too tight.
-
-
3
Hold the needle in your right hand so that the tail is on the side of the needle closest to you and the ball is on the other side. Close the three bottom fingers of your left hand around the two strands of yarn and stick your forefinger and thumb between the two strands between your left hand and the needle. Spread your thumb and finger apart like you are showing how long something is.
-
4
Dip the point of the needle in your right hand toward the base of your left thumb. At this point, the two strands of yarn (wrapped around your thumb and forefinger) should be above the needle in a "V" shape.
-
5
Move the tip of the needle under the strand of yarn around the front of your thumb by tipping your needle point up toward the top of your thumb.
-
6
Tip the needle point down between the two sides of the strand of yarn that is wrapped around your index finger so that the needle point is pointing at the base of the palm-side of your index finger.
-
7
Turn the needle point toward your body between the two sides of the strand wrapped around your thumb.
-
8
Pull your thumb out of the loop and pull the two strands so that the loop around the needle is tightened.
-
9
Repeat 24 times. With the slip knot you started with, you should now have 25 loops around your needle.
