How to Make a Pebble Mosaic
A homemade pebble mosaic is a craft that is as unique as the adult or child who makes it. You can use pebble mosaics to decorate your home or yard with one-of-a-kind artwork. Collect the stones for your mosaic from the local area or purchase a variety of colored stones from a craft store. A pebble mosaic is a meaningful project for you and your children do to together.

Instructions

1
Cover your work area with newspaper and wear goggles and gloves to prevent skin irritation.
-
2
Stir water into your concrete until it is the consistency of brownie mix. A ratio of 5 parts concrete to 1 part water is best. Use a disposable mixing bowl because you will not be able to wash it out when you finish your project.

3
Spoon concrete into your mold or container. Fill it halfway then tap the container gently on the table to allow any bubbles to rise to the surface. Fill the container to just below the rim with cement and tap again to remove bubbles.
-
4
Leave the mold to dry for 30 minutes or according to the package directions so that it will be solid enough to work with when you put stones in it.
-
5
Press pebbles, rocks or other embellishments into the cement to form your mosaic. If you remove a rock to change its position, use the spoon or tap the container to smooth the cement out again.
-
6
Leave the mold to harden for 2 to 3 days so that it will be a permanent design.
-
7
Break the container away from your mosaic and enjoy your work of art.

Tips & Warnings
Use baking pans, old containers or plastic trays for your mold. If you use something that is non-breakable, coat the inside with petroleum jelly before you add your cement so that you will be able to remove it once it is dry.
Cement is an eye and skin irritant, so wear gloves and work carefully. Cover your work area with an old shower curtain or newspapers and wash thoroughly with soap and water if you get any cement on your skin.
