By using a slipknot, you can use a scarf like a tie.

Scarves are a fabulous accessory for any wardrobe. Their adaptability is reason enough to own at least one. Scarves can be worn as headbands, shirts, skirts, belts and around the neck. Scarves can be used as a tie with business attire for a professional look using a tying method called the slipknot. Tying a scarf into a slipknot uses a similar technique as a regular tie, but with a slight difference to accommodate for the scarf's extra material. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the scarf to create a tie shape. Scarves come in different shapes and sizes. Thin scarves do not need to be folded. Rectangular shaped scarves can be folded lengthwise to form a thinner shape. Square scarves can be made smaller by using a method called "folding along the bias." Set your square scarf on a flat surface so it is shaped like a diamond. Fold the upper corner a third of the way down the scarf. Then fold the bottom corner up so that it touches the outer edge of the scarf. Alternate folding the bottom and top of the scarves until your scarf is rolled into the shape of a tie.

    • 2

Wrap the scarf tie around your neck so that the two ends are hanging near your chest. Place the scarf under your collar if you are wearing a collared shirt.

    • 3

Hold the ends of the scarf, one in each hand. Cross one end over the other two times.

    • 4

Bring the bottom scarf end up through the back loop created by the scarf's ends crossing. Using the same scarf end, slide it down through the front loop.

    • 5

Hold the knot in one hand to center, while pulling the front scarf end down. Loosen or tighten the scarf, depending on the look you are trying to achieve. For example, a loosened knot is more casual that a tightened knot.
