Cabinets for Singer Touch and Sew treadle machines are fairly commonplace.

The Touch and Sew version of the Singer sewing machine was a treadle-run sewing machine in a wooden cabinet built in the 1950s. The sewing machine is attached to the cabinet by large metal hinges with large screws. As this machine is found in antique stores without a cabinet, it is important to know how to mount the machine's screws properly to a new wooden cabinet because the sewing machine will not sit evenly on a table.

Things You'll Need

  • Wooden sewing machine cabinet
  • Singer Touch and Sew machine
  • Chalk
  • Awl drill bit
  • Chisel
  • Screwdriver or drill with Phillips bit
  • 4 1/2-inch screws

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the wooden table top of the new cabinet and sand it if necessary.

    • 2

Set the Singer Touch and Sew machine in the center of the table and draw a chalk line around the machine, including the hinges.

    • 3

Cut 1/2-inch deep into the cabinet where the chalk like was drawn with the awl drill bit. Chisel the rest of the wood out of the section drawn with chalk following the wood grain.

    • 4

Use the awl to cut out the round sections for the hinges 1/2-inch deep. Chisel a 1/2-inch-wide opening between the round holes and the section for the body of the machine.

    • 5

Mount the machine into the cutout section of the wooden cabinet and screw the hinges down with the drill and 1/2-inch screws.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use thick, strong wood, such as cherry, for the new cabinet.

  • Keep all power tools away from small children.
