How to Knit a Fancy Scarf

How to Knit a Fancy Scarf thumbnail
Knitted scarves can be personalized to your style with yarn types and colors.

A hand-knit scarf can be a stylish accent to your cold-weather wardrobe. Creating an elegant, professional-looking scarf starts with selecting a beautiful yarn. There are numerous special occasion-style yarns available, such as those with sparkly threads woven in to the yarn. Begin with a luxurious yarn and use a lacy stitch pattern for a sophisticated knit scarf.

Instructions

    • 1

Create cast-on stitches by placing a slip knot on the needle held in the left hand. Slide the right-hand needle through the slip knot from front to back, ending with the right needle behind the left needle. Wrap the yarn around the right needle's tip, draw the right needle's tip through the slip knot, and slide the newly created loop on the right needle over to the left needle. One cast-on stitch is made. Continue in the manner until 40 stitches are on the left needle, including the original slip knot.

    • 2

Knit all stitches across the cast-on row. Create knit stitches by acting as if you were to cast on, but instead of sliding the newly created loop from the right needle to the left needle, leave the new loop on the right needle and slip the stitch just worked through off of the left needle.

    • 3

Knit all stitches across the next row.

    • 4

Purl all stitches across the next row. Create purl stitches by sliding the right needle through the designated stitch on the left needle from back to front, making sure the yarn coming from the skein is at the front of the work. Wrap the yarn around the right needle's tip, and pull the right needle through the stitch on the left needle, creating a new loop. Drop the stitch off of the left needle, and keep the new stitch on the right needle.

    • 5

Complete the next row as follows: knit three stitches, wrap the yarn around the right needle from the back to the front, knit two stitches, slip one stitch from the left needle onto the right needle, knit one stitch, lift the slipped stitch over the last knit stitch and off of the right needle, knit two stitches together, knit two stitches, wrap the yarn round the right needle from the back to the front and knit one stitch. Repeat until two stitches remain on the left needle. Knit the last two stitches.

    • 6

Purl all stitches across the next row.

    • 7

Complete the next row as follows: knit two stitches, wrap the yarn around the right needle from the back to the front, knit two stitches, slip one stitch from the left needle onto the right needle, knit one stitch, lift the slipped stitch over the last knit stitch and off of the right needle, knit two stitches together, knit two stitches, wrap the yarn round the right needle from the back to the front and knit one stitch. Repeat until three stitches remain on the left needle. Knit the last three stitches.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 4 through 7 until the piece measures 6 feet in length, ending with a Step 7 row.

    • 9

Knit all stitches across two rows.

    • 10

Bind off all stitches. To bind off, knit two stitches onto the right needle and lift the first knit stitch over the second knit stitch and off of the needle. Knit another stitch onto the right needle, and continue to lift the first stitch over the second stitch and off the needle until one loop remains on the right needle.

    • 11

Cut the yarn, leaving 6-inch tail. Thread the tail through the yarn needle, and draw the needle through the last loop on the right needle. Pull the loop off of the needle, pull tightly, and secure.

    • 12

Sew in the loose ends by making a few small stitches along the edges of the scarf and then clipping the yarn.

Tips & Warnings

  • To knit two stitches together, slide the right needle through two stitches at once before knitting, rather than just through one stitch.
