How to Tighten the Drive Chain on a CBR
Honda CBR motorcycles have been in production since 1987. The most popular CBR-series motorcycles are the CBR 600 models. The CBR-series bikes are also available in 400, 750, 900, 954, 1000 and 1100 models. All CBR motorcycles have inline-four cylinder engines, with dual front disc and single rear disc brakes. Chain adjustment is very important on the CBR and any motorcycle. A chain that is too loose runs the risk of damaging the sprockets or jumping off the sprockets entirely, which can damage the chain, sprockets, and engine case. It only takes a few minutes to adjust the chain.

1
Place the CBR on its kickstand. Either kickstand will do.
-
2
Use a ratchet and socket to loosen the rear axle nut.
-
-
3
Use a wrench to loosen the lock nuts on the chain-adjusting bolts. These are threaded rods that are attached to the adjuster plates that fit in the swing arm. They are in front of the axle.
-
4
Use a wrench to turn the adjusters to move the axle backwards. This will tighten the chain. Make sure to adjust both sides evenly. You want to line up the marks on the adjuster with the marks on the top of the swingarm. Make sure the marks are in the same position on both sides. Note that the swingarm has a "red zone." If the index mark on the adjuster plate moves into this area, you should consider replacing the chain.
-
5
Adjust the chain so that the bottom of the chain, between the sprockets, has a total up-and-down movement of between of between 1.2 to 1.6 inches. Use a tape measure to measure the chain movement by extending a length of tape and holding it against the swingarm and move the chain up and down while looking at the tape.

6
Use a torque wrench and socket to torque the axle nut 83 foot-pounds. Use a wrench to tighten the adjusting bolt lock nuts.
