How to Replace a Jacket Cover on a Book
Books often see a lot of wear and tear. They get jostled around in backpacks, tossed on the floor, spend time under water glasses and accumulate dust on shelves. Since books go through so much, many come with dust jackets. However, dust jackets can acquire just as much damage as the book itself. Plus, they're slippery and easy to lose. If your books need protection, but the jackets have been destroyed or lost, don't worry. You can give the books a facelift and protection with household items.

1
Tear open one of the corners of a brown paper bag, slowly, and spread it out on a flat surface. If you're using a large bag, you shouldn't need more than one large panel to cover a book.
-
2
Open the book you're covering to the center page and lay it, cover down, on the paper bag. Trace around the book with a pencil, leaving a 2-inch border between the edges of the book cover and the pencil line.

3
Cut out the paper rectangle and lay it on top of a piece of decorative fabric. Trace around the edge of the brown paper with a pencil. Cut out the fabric. Stiffer fabrics, like quilting fabric, work well. Choose any design you like.
-
4
Cut out a piece of iron-on adhesive webbing to the same size as the fabric and brown paper. Place the webbing, shiny side down, on the wrong side of the fabric and iron it on the cotton setting for about 30 seconds.
-
5
Peel the matte backing off of the webbing and lay the brown paper on top of it. Iron once more, fusing the fabric and the paper into a sturdy, semi-waterproof piece.
-
6
Fold the extra 2 inches on the long sides of your new book jacket down, securing them in place with glue dots. This creates a neat edge along the top and bottom of your book.
-
7
Open your book to the center page and lay it down on the brown paper side of your new book jacket. Fold the right and left edges of the jacket over the right and left edges of the book cover, securing them with more glue dots. The dots shouldn't damage your book.
