How to Categorize Posts Under a Subheader in Blogger

Organizing your Blogger blog posts under a category subheading can help visitors find their way around your blog, particularly if your site has many posts and pages. Unfortunately, the free Blogger service doesn't include a category feature, but there is a workaround solution. To categorize posts under subheadings in Blogger, use the "Labels" tool to categorize each post and configure Blogger to display each label as a subheading in the navigation menu.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to Blogger. This opens the Blogger "Dashboard" page with a list of all your hosted blogs.

    • 2

Click "Edit Posts" beneath the title of the blog for which you want to categorize posts. Click the "Edit" link next to a blog post title to launch the blog post editor.

    • 3

Type a relevant category for the blog post into the "Labels" input field. You can assign as many labels to the post as you want, but separate each label with a comma. Click "Publish Post" to update your blog with the labeled post. Click the "Edit Post" tab to return to the list of blog posts. Repeat this process for each of the blog posts that you want to label and categorize.

    • 4

Click the "Design" tab in the main navigation menu. This displays the blog layout with each page element in the main Blogger pane.

    • 5

Click the "Add a Gadget" link in the column or page area in which you want to display the category subheading.

    • 6

Click the blue "+" button beside "Labels" in the "Add Gadget" dialog box. This launches the "Configure Labels" window.

    • 7

Change "Labels" to "Categories" in the "Title" input box. This creates the "Categories" subheading on the page. Click and select the radio button beside "List" to display the labels/categories in list format on the blog. Choose your preferred display formats by selecting the relevant radio buttons -- for example, opt to arrange the categories alphabetically or by frequency. Click the orange "Save" button to save your configuration.

    • 8

Choose "Save" in the top right-hand corner of the page to save your blog settings. Your Blogger blog will now display the number of posts in each category in a "Categories" box on the page.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you create new blog posts, remember to assign a category in the "Labels" input box beneath the blog post editor. If you forget, you can add a category to a published post by following the above procedure again.
