How to Crochet a Hood for a Newborn Cocoon

Cocoons keep toes from kicking away covers.

Knitted or crocheted baby cocoons help keep a new baby warm and secure. The easiest way to add a cozy hood to the cocoon is to add a triangular back to one side, then crochet a triangular piece to fit on the front, forming a hood similar to those on hooded blankets or towels. Pull up the hood when taking your baby into inclement weather, or roll it back into a hanging cowl.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase or make a sack-style baby cocoon. Beginning at center front, single stitch around the top of the cocoon. If the cocoon is made of fabric, use a small, metal crochet hook that can push through the fibers of the cocoon, catch the yarn and pull it through the fabric to make this first row of stitches. Use a hook size that is compatible with the thread size after you complete the first row.

Turn the work so that the back is facing you and you are looking at the back of the center front. Working from the center front and moving counter clockwise, begin at chain one, skip the first stitch, then single-crochet back to the front.

    • 3

Turn the work so that the front of the garment is now facing you, starting at chain one, skip the first stitch, and crochet back around to the front. Turn the work, but this time do not decrease; just single-crochet across. Repeat these three rows until you create a triangular-shaped backing. Fasten it off by cutting the yarn and pulling the loose end through the last loop. Work the end back through the crocheted stitches.

Crochet a chain long enough to reach around the top of the cocoon. Use it as a base to crochet a triangular piece of material, using the same method as you used for the backing piece. Once it is the same size, cut the yarn and fasten off by pulling the cut end through the last loop. Work the loose end back through the crochet.

Place the triangular piece you just made against the outside of the backing piece. Slip-stitch the edges together. Turn right-side out. Decorate the corner-shaped top with a pom-pom or crocheted flower.
