How to Get an Enchanted Weapon in the Game "Oblivion"

In "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" a basic sword works well against weaker enemies, but against stronger foes, you need to wield an enchanted weapon. When you use an enchanted weapon on an enemy, it does additional damage in the form of a magic spell. For example, some enchanted weapons do fire or ice damage. Others poison a foe with a single strike or disintegrate his armor completely. To get an enchanted weapon, find one in the field, buy one or make one yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an enchanted weapon if you do not have the skill to make one or money to buy one. As you level up, better loot appears in dungeons and on enemies, increasing your chances of finding an enchanted weapon. Most mages and some bandits carry enchanted weapons.

    • 2

Purchase an enchanted weapon from a shop. This is the best option if you want a weapon quickly and cannot enchant one yourself. Enchanted weapons at stores, though, are often expensive. Try to barter with the shopkeeper to increase his disposition towards you. This causes him to lower his prices.

    • 3

Collect a Sigil Stone to add a single enchantment to a weapon. Find Sigil Stones at the end of every Oblivion Gate. To use the Stone, simply select it in your inventory and choose the weapon to enchant.

    • 4

Join the Mage's Guild if you want to make your own enchanted weapon. After you do some of the introductory quests, you advance to the Arcane University, where enchanting occurs.

    • 5

Take a normal weapon and a filled soul gem to any enchanting altar at the Arcane University. Soul gems contain the souls of monsters you slay while the Soul Trap spell is active. More powerful souls allow you to add multiple and long-lasting effects to the weapon.

    • 6

Select the weapon and soul gem you want at the altar. Select the magnitude of the enchantment. Choose the area, or how widely the effect from the weapon spreads. Finally, select the duration, or how long the effect lasts.

    • 7

Select the effects you want to add to the weapon. Each effect you add subtracts from your total soul gem points. If you make an effect stronger, that also subtracts points. When the points run out, you cannot add more effects.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once a weapon is enchanted, you cannot enchant it again or remove the effects you added.

  • Recharge your enchanted weapons using soul gems. Rare Varla Stones, found in Ayleid ruins, also work. Enchanters in the Mage's Guild also recharge weapons for a fee.
