A multimeter helps you determine in seconds if the oven element is bad.

A Frigidaire electric range contains two oven elements, one at the interior top for broiling and a bottom element for roasting, baking and warming. As with any electric range, the element in your Frigidaire can wear out and fail over time. Replacing the element takes only a few minutes with a screwdriver, but before buying the new part, perform a simple test with a multimeter to check the element and verify that it is indeed the problem. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Frigidaire range and let the appliance cool before unplugging the power cord.

    • 2

Lower the oven door and slide out the wire racks. Set these aside.

    • 3

Remove the screws holding the element you wish to check from the bracket in the back wall of your Frigidaire. Once the screws are out, pull the element out of the power socket.

    • 4

Attach the two probes on the end of the multimeter wires to the two metal prongs on the element where it plugs into your Frigidaire. Dial the multimeter function control knob to the "Ohms" setting.

    • 5

Watch the readout on your multimeter. A reading of 20-40 ohms is the normal range for an electric oven heating element. If the multimeter registers "0" or "Infinite," the element is burned out and must be replaced. Take the element with you to an appliance repair store to match with the proper part.
