How to Dig a Trench at the Beach thumbnail
Digging a trench on the beach can be useful for making moats for a sandcastle.

Going to the beach and swimming there can help you cool off during hot summer days. There are other activities that you can do at the beach, such as making sand castles, tanning or even digging trenches. Digging a trench can be useful for playing with toy soldiers, building moats or creating art in the sand. Trench digging is a process that takes some preparation and manual labor. Keep people away from your trench so they don't fall in and twist their ankle. Fill in your trench when you're done with it.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig up dark mud from the wet areas of the beach and place it in your bucket. Fill the bucket up with mud and then go back to where you are going to dig your trench.

    • 2

Mark your trench area by placing stakes into the sand at the beginning of the trench and tying a string to the end of the stake.

    • 3

Continue placing stakes along the trench and attach them all with strings. The strings help you plan your trench and warn people to stay back from the digging area.

    • 4

Dig the sand out of the trench with a trowel and throw the sand to the side of the trench. Dig it three or four inches deep.

    • 5

Place mud along the sides of the trench to help keep the sides of the trench from falling down. Put mud along the top of the trench to help it keep its shape.
