It's always enjoyable to create a unique piece of jewelry, either for yourself or someone else. Floater or illusion necklaces create the impression that the beads are floating around the wearer's neck. This airy, casual look works well with light summer dresses and t-shirts. An ideal project for a beginning beader, floater necklaces also make cherished gifts.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the length of the necklace. Add five inches to that length, and cut a corresponding piece of beading cord to this measurement.

    • 2

Lay out the beads in sequence. For the best floating effect, leave two inches or more between beads. Place a bead stop or paper clip on one end of the beading thread to prevent the beads from falling off.

    • 3

String the first bead onto the thread, positioning it two inches from the end of the thread. Tie an overhand knot on either side to keep it in position.

    • 4

Add the remaining beads in sequence to the necklace. Tie overhand knots on both sides of each bead to keep it in position.

    • 5

Thread a crimp and one part of the necklace clasp to each end of the cord. Feed the end of the cord back through the crimp, then use the crimping tool to secure the crimp and fastener. Give a gentle tug to make sure it is secure, and trim any excess cording.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a pointed object to nudge the knots close to the bead before tightening the knots.
